That's a good question. Not every person in town belongs to a coterie, and from what I understand, most cities have a mayor who's separate from all of that. Maybe they're only leaders because they created them in the first place.
... Furniture choices? It's hard to picture Zephyr having strong opinions about that, but I guess anything is possible.
We could always ask. Do a poll of sorts. It may help us to learn more about the people and politics of this place.
Zephyr has an absolutely ABHORRENT chair that inflicts pain upon my eyes every time I'm unlucky enough to glance upon it. He says it's comfortable. I think he's afraid to taste the finer things in life.
I bought him a new, beautiful chair and he refuses to sit in it. REFUSES.
Zephyr may also be slightly annoyed that I put his chair into the trash without asking, but why would I ask when I was clearly doing him a favour? He actually brought it back inside.
I suppose we could. I'm not sure I want to draw so much attention from the leaders themselves, though. It's hard to say how much of these conversations they're able to read...or how much they care to.
It was just the chair. If you could see it you would understand. The leather looks like it's been ripped apart by a zeugle, and the wood is so dull and scuffed I can only imagine the tree it originated from would decline to know it.
[oh my god????? okay okay okay. time to channel his BEST INNER KISARA.]
You know, in Calaglia, we didn't exactly get the luxury of having things that belonged to us, especially not things we picked ourselves. Things we like. Comfortable things. So he comes here, finally finds something he likes a bit, that's comfortable. And then you...threw it away. So it's the principle of the thing. I can see why he'd be upset.
He brought it back in. The worst it suffered was a little rain, which honestly... may have improved its scent and appearance.
. . .
I didn't think of it that way. I suppose it's not the value of the item that matters, but the fact he chose it for himself after a lifetime without the freedom to do so. And I disrespected that choice over something so silly as aesthetics.
It sounds like I have an apology to make.
But I do have to say-- it really is the most ugly chair I have ever encountered across two different worlds.
At least now it's a little cleaner? Maybe that's all it needs. A little...freshening up.
That's how I would feel, at least. I don't think anyone likes having their things taken without warning, especially when things have already been hard enough for you.
Zephyr is a reasonable guy. I'm sure he'll come around if you apologize.
Just like when we were traveling, living with someone has its share of compromise. Sometimes you might have to keep the chair or eat the porridge or whatever will bring the peace, at least with little things.
I bought him a beautiful handwoven throw blanket as an apology gift. He can nap warmly by the fireside, and I can cover the chair when it's not in use. That way we both win.
Then I will fully apologize, make him a very delicious dinner, and pour his drinks for the rest of the night.
Porridge is indeed a compromise. Especially when it's Shionne's turn to prepare a meal.
Its as if she enjoys the... toothsome nature of undercooked oats. Perhaps they're more filling that way?
I'd like to think I'm quite good at apologies. A nice gift, some kind words, an expression of utter sincerity-- perhaps a poem, to truly express one's heart.
[RIP Zephyr.]
Yes... just time, finesse, and flavour.
One day she'll have mastered porridge. Or found a better recipe.
I hope so. Kiichpan had so many delicious food stalls, I hope the vendors lived to cook another day. They were good people, and I'd love to learn from them.
It's a long trek to make for the injured, but a worthy one. There are plenty of healers to go around, and some far more experienced than I.
To learn the more practical side of healing would be useful for when I run out of energy, and can no longer rely on my artes. How to properly care for someone with the bare necessities, for when one is short on curatives, as we so often are.
Some books may be removed, but the older, more rare books must remain in the library for safekeeping. I truly don't mind reading amongst others, so long as there is relative silence.
Those who ruin the peace and sanctity of libraries deserve to be punished.
It sounds like you're thinking about staying there long term. I can't say it wouldn't be a good fit. And it seems like the salamanders can use all the help they can get.
I see! So you're looking for older books. Anything interesting?
With all the visitors that must be there, I can't imagine it's quiet all the time. Hopefully no one is too rowdy in the library, at least.
I'm considering it. The libraries, gardens, and my current living situation make it very tempting to switch coteries, though I don't believe there's a rule saying I can't remain a Viper while living away from Kiichpan.
I have a certain area of study in mind, yes. Whether or not this place has geographical concentrations of astral artes, similar to Dahna, is something I am very curious to know.
Nobody that I've seen so far. Of course, the occasional child has been a touch obnoxious, but I will spare the rod for the first offense.
Oh, I guess that's true. And there's no rule that says only one coterie can learn medicine... It sounds like you've put some thought into this over the past few days.
That's an interesting idea...and one I never really thought of. Rinwell said she could feel the energy of this place, a little bit. Maybe, in some ways, it's not so unlike home after all. Any luck so far?
Not that I know of. I will speak to Salamander of course, out of respect, but I don't imagine she will take issue either way. One less Viper for a Salamander healer to waste their time and energy upon.
I haven't gotten far enough in my research to be certain. I may end up enlisting her help, if I do need to sense such areas. As of right now... my hypothesis is still little more than an idea, and I don't want to put anyone at unnecessary risk.
I'll read more after Law leaves. I've been enjoying the time all of us are spending together. The books aren't going anywhere, and young people grow up so fast.
I would hope not. I meant it when I said they could use all the help they can get. Hell, they'll probably be relieved... Who knows, before long they might have whole classes for other coterie members.
I appreciate that. But she'll definitely want to know more about your thoughts on this. Maybe she's even been thinking about some of the same things.
Ah, right, it must be pretty lively there right now. You can tell him that the chickens are doing great. I think they miss him a bit, though.
That's a wonderful idea. Perhaps I will suggest it in our discussion.
Yes, she will, but as the subject matters leans towards the... darker side of artes, I want to be absolutely certain of my goals before approaching her. Rinwell does struggle with the alignment of her magic, and I wouldn't want to needlessly add to her discomfort.
Actually, it's been rather quiet. Relaxing, even. A lot of sleeping, eating, and simply enjoying one another's company. I've never enjoyed doing so little so much.
I have passed on your message. He appears pleased... and a little guilty.
I will include her as soon as I feel it's safe to do so. Rinwell is a highly accomplished mage and with her help we could accomplish our goals much faster, but... she is young, and still learning to accept her strength for what it is.
To be quite honest, I haven't spent time in the company of other people for anything less than practical or political reasons in some time. I'd almost forgotten how to behave on this level. As a human, rather than a Lord, or freedom fighter.
It really is. I have no idea how he does it. All his animals hate me :(

I simply cannot even fathom.

The porridge isn't that bad. Really. It just needs...flavor?
... And, yeah, maybe another minute of cooking time. Or three.

I think you'd be fine with JUST the sincerity. Too much might get a bit...overwhelming.
We're all still learning when it comes to cooking, right? Maybe we'll find some new favorite recipes while we're here.

A lot of the refugees got taken to Coba. It could be worth a trip out there to find out...when things settle down a bit, I mean.

It seems many have converged upon Coatepec as well, and after I thought I would get to enjoy the library in relative silence.
I say that in jest, of course. Books should be accessible by all.
[A Lordly 'JK'.]

I guess that makes sense...a lot of people were injured. It'd be good to have medics and healers on hand to deal with that.
Sorry about the books, though. Aren't you supposed to be able to take books out of the library? Maybe you could take one home with you.

Understood. I don't understand much about artes, but I'd be virtuous about this hypothesis of yours, too, when you feel more sure about it.
Relaxing, huh? I'm glad you're enjoying it. I feel like the downtime just makes everything feel...longer.
Sorry! I didn't mean to make him feel guilty. It's weird howmuch animals love him, is all
